I've Proved All My Critics Wrong: Katrina Kaif

Five years into Bollywood, Britain-born actress Katrina Kaif is proud that she could prove wrong all those people who wrote her off during her initial days in the industry. She is one of the few actresses who can boast of giving six hits in a row.
"When I started, people were not only writing me off for my strong British accent, there were many others who tried to prevent me from making it till here, " Katrina told in an interview here.
"They didn't do so in an aggressive or excessive manner, but they used to say things like 'I don't know...' and 'I'm not sure...' that would suggest a not-so-positive approach towards me. But I proved myself ultimately.

"I always try and push myself to exceed expectations. I use this ideology in a positive way, " she explained.

Katrina was emphatic when she spoke of her belief in destiny.

"The great thing about life is that you never know what can happen and there's no limitation to it. Someone can tell you that you can never be this and never be that. It's not true. Anyone can be what he wants to be and destiny plays a major part in it. God has of course been very kind to me.

"I believe that everyone should try and live their dreams, follow them and they might just come true someday, " Katrina said.
From her disastrous debut with "Boom" in 2003 to five hits in a row in 2007, the 24-year-old has not only worked hard on her acting skills, she has also shown a marked improvement in her Hindi dialogue delivery.

Commenting on her improved accent, Katrina - born of a Kashmiri father and a British mother - said: "Interacting with various people on and off the sets and doing some eight Hindi movies, dealing with Hindi scripts, practising dialogue delivery... I think that in itself has taught me and helped me improve my accent."
Katrina is in the news nowadays for having delivered one box office dud "Yuvvraaj" after delivering six back-to-back hits including "Namastey London", "Apne", "Partner', "Welcome", "Race" and "Singh Is Kinng".
After so many hits, she was tagged as a lucky mascot for producers by trade pundits, but the actress is not pleased with the "lucky" label.
"'Lucky mascot' doesn't make any sense. It is such an illogical statement. A successful film is a combination of a good director, good music, intelligent script, good timing, destiny, everybody's efforts and audience's reaction. There isn't a reason or an explanation that you can tag a person as lucky, " she remarked.
In her career, Katrina has predominantly dabbled in comedies, but she has lately "felt the need to progress a bit" and try her hand at different things.
"If you see Akshay Kumar, he was an action hero and then he went to comedy and found out his real calling. It took him to new heights of superstardom. I think it is important to take risks and figure out what really suits you.
"Every actor has a strength like Aamir does romance and Akshay does comedy, but I don't know my strength yet.
"If I get a contrast role in one film like where one get-up has me play a simple, shy and homely girl, the other has me as a brass and loud girl, I would definitely do that, " she said in an excited tone.
As of now, Katrina has a number of films in her kitty.
She is doing two films with Ranbir Kapoor including "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" by Rajkumar Santoshi. She is also working with Prakash Jha on his multi-starrer "Rajniti".
These apart, she has one comedy film in hand and a two-film deal each with UTV and TV 18 respectively.

I'm The Next Female Akshay Kumar: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone is mighty happy about being an action star in her forthcoming film with Kinng Kumar - 'Chandni Chowk To China'.

She's done so many stunts in the film that she's calling herself the female Akshay Kumar.

Deepika can't stop talking about them.

She's said, "I'm sure I have gone through a lot of death defying action in the film. But I was prepared for it when I signed the film."

Deepika sports a very interesting look in the film. She's pleased that she's learnt some interesting tricks from him as well.

She's added, "Akshay taught me lots of action. He said that action is like dancing so you have to be very graceful while doing it. I like to believe that main next female Akshay Kumkar hoon (I'm the next female Akshay Kumar)."

MTV Roadies is back with a more adventurous journey in its sixth season, Roadies — Hell Down with a prize money of Rs 10, 00, 000. The show has tied up with Rohan Sippy's 'Chandni Chowk To China', which would also be Deepika's first film with Akshay Kumar!

Kunal Kohli’s Say's Mumbai - The War Within The City

Whats sad is that we can’t put one date for the attack on our beloved Mumbai as the attack has gone on for over 3 dates. After the dust settles and our brave security forces have overcome the terrorists the question that really needs to be asked is that ‘is this the new face of terrorism ?’

Is this going to be the way the terrorists attack our cities, our country our world? It somehow seems, very sadly and shockingly, that the terrorists have figured out that it takes the same number of terrorists to wage a war on a city rather than have bomb blasts. The war that have they raged in Mumbai has not only got the attention of the entire world, but its got one of the major financial capitals to a halt for about 36 hours.

While giving some interviews to the BBC world service radio stations I realized that a lot of people all over the world were critical of our security vis a vis the attacks, to theses people I argued about the security of the U.S when their pentagon was attacked during the 9/11 attacks or the London or Madrid bombings. Its very easy for the western world to point fingers at our forces easily forgetting their own failures of intelligence.

Our security forces are amongst the best in the world or possibly the best in the world, in hopeless or really tough situations like Kargil our forces have proved victorious time and again. The operation at the Taj, Oberoi Trident and Nariman Bhavan were certainly not easy when you keep in mind the scores of guests, the multiple places for the terrorists to hide, the size of the hotels, the various rooms, back offices, its like a maze, through which the forces have to go through every corner and not just flush out every terrorist, but protect the lives of innocent people and try and cause as less damage to the heritage property. Our armed forces truly need to be saluted.

How can we ever repay the sacrifice of Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Vijay Salaskar and so many other jawans.

We also need to take out time to salute the journalists who braved their lives and brought us the live images. Did you notice one thing that apart from Srinivasan Jain and a handful of others, most of the journalists were women ? Across all channels there were women journalists covering the most dangerous terror attack the city has seen. Barkha Dutt, Mahroof and so many other women were covering the attacks, were in the line of fire, were at every dangerous spot and were there more than the men, theres something to be said about that too.

Pranoy Roys interview of the pakistan Foreign Minister was strong and direct as were his answers.

A harrowing point we all haven't come across yet was mentioned in passing by an American woman who was rescued, she said "they made us wait in our rooms till they cleared the staircase of bodies". How many bodies are finally going to come out of the Taj and Oberoi Trident are truly going to shake us all.

This attack however was an attack on the entire world on Indian soil. The terrorists clearly asking for British and American nationals, the attack on a Jewish centre at Nariman Bhavan, all this points to the fact that the terrorists wanted the impact of this attack felt all over the world. This new kind of terror attack of waging a war on the streets of a major city is something the world needs to take note of and try and fight together.

This is not the time for the world to look down on third world or developing countries and pull out investments. This is not a time for clichés of the spirit of the people or the resilience. We have no choice, we have to get back to work and we will. This is the time for every one to take note of and to study together the root of these attacks. The world needs to pool resources and get to the root of these attacks. Who funded the attacks ? where did these young boys get their military training to carry out such a well planned attack ? Who planned the attacks ? The attacks have been planned with such military precision and intelligence, so as to cause maximum impact with least resources, and also to prolong the attack.

The answers to these questions and the relevant and appropriate actions thereof will help curtail such attacks in the future on future cities. Otherwise what happened in Mumbai in November 2008 can happen again in another city in another part of the world, because suddenly terror has found a new war to wage on us. What are we going to do about it ? How we act in times of adversary is what defines us and our future, how are we going to act ?.

"OLLO Is Basically A Work Of Research, Imagination And Memories" - Dibakar

He made his splashing debut in the dream world of Bollywood merely two years ago with a smash-hit film called Khosla Ka Ghosla starring the factory of versatile actors like Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles. He is none other than the extremely down to earth Dibakar Banerjee, who is back to amuse the cine goers yet again with his latest offering Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! which is all set to test itself at the Box-Office this Friday (Nov 28).

Bollywood Hungama caught up with the director for an exclusive one-on-one interview.Dibakar, to start with Khosla ka Ghosla and now Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, it seems that Bollywood can completely trust you when it comes to uncommon movie titles. In a nutshell, tell us as to what's Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! all about? The film is about a thief called Lucky and his rise from being a normal guy (like anyone one of us) to a thief. Even as a thief, he goes on to become not just the country's most wanted but also the most loved thief. Since the film is set in Delhi, the title has got lot of prominence and significance with the city. Look, what happens in Delhi is that whenever you want to call out to someone whose name is Lucky; you generally tend to call him in this fashion 'Oye Lucky...Lucky Oye'. Hence, the title.

Even as a thief, Lucky goes on to become not just the country's most wanted but also the most loved thief Do you accept or refute the rumors that Lucky's character inspired from a real life thief?I totally refuse to but such rumours. Lucky's character is purely a piece of fiction and my imagination. It also reflects the memories of my childhood. Moreover, I've also exploited the characteristic behaviors characteristic behaviors of many thieves. All of this, plus, there are many adventures that I've taken from magazines, television programs. All in all, Oye Lucky!

Lucky Oye! is basically a work of research, imagination, and memories.
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is basically a work of research, imagination, and memories What are the locations that you have shot the film? We shot the film in Delhi, Manali and Mumbai. You have managed to get the super versatile Paresh Rawal in not one, but a whopping three roles. Which one of his three characters do you identify with? All the three characters are very dear to me because they are all my creations...they are all like my babies. Hence, I love all of them. So, it's really difficult for me to single out one character. Any memorable moments while shooting for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! that you would like to share with us? My most memorable moment was when Paresh Rawal was playing Sardar's character with around 2000 people waiting to see his act on the sets. It so happened that Paresh Rawal came in the Sardarji's get-up, played his part and simply went off. Throughout the shoot, no one recognized that the 'Sardar' was actually Paresh Rawal, as a result of which everyone kept on waiting for him!

Paresh Rawal came in the Sardarji's get-up, played his part and simply went off. Throughout the shoot, no one recognized that the 'Sardar' was actually Paresh Rawal! How has the music of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! shaped up? The music of the film was done after a month long research in the interiors of Punjab and Haryana. The music director of the film- Sneha Khanwalkar went on researching for new kinds of tunes, and sounds. And she came back with really off-beat tunes, themes, and voices. The voices used in the film are such that they can only be heard in the deep interior villages and local musical shows. And, when we heard the Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! album, it was very root layered and folk in terms of its sound and orchestration. It truly brings out the flavor of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.

The voices used in the film are such that they can only be heard in the deep interior villages and local musical shows. One of the characters played by Paresh Rawal is that of a 'marriage band master'. How did you get the idea of such a character? This 'bandwala' character I got from a newspaper article that I had read nearly ten years back. I built on the character and hence it's not based on any real person but is a figment of my imagination. Paresh Rawal was given a week's time to research and perfect the character. He had to do the speech exercises to get the right mix of Delhi style Hindi-Punjabi accent. We even had a voice artist who recorded some long dialogues in that accent so that Paresh could get the right feel of the language. Obviously, Paresh Rawal kept hearing and practicing his lines and did get it bang on target.

Paresh Rawal was given a week's time to research and perfect the character. The buzz doing the rounds is that you are directing a film for Yash Raj Films. Is it true? No, I'm not doing any Yash Raj Film. Finally give us 3 reasons, why people should go and watch Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!? Well, the first reason is if you are a thief then you should watch the film. The second reason is if you are not a thief then you should watch the film, the third reason is if you are not a thief and are planning to become one then you should watch it!!!

2009 to begin with 'Horn Ok Pleassss

HORN OK PLEASSSS was slated for release in the forthcoming week [December 5]. In fact, the makers had started pushing the film all over again, with gusto, on all channels. But the release date has been shifted yet again. The film will now hit the screens on January 9 next year, making it the first major release of 2009. Why was the release date shifted ahead again? "We want to promote the film far more aggressively. Now that the film has been pushed ahead, we will have ample time to promote it further," Abdol Samee Siddiqui clarifies. Nana's PAATHSHAALA was initially supposed to be the first release of 2009, but now another Nana starrer, HORN OK PLEASSSS, will be the first release of 2009.

Karan Johar Features In The November Issue Of People

Kuch toh 'log' kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna...Well, the ironical part is that the abovementioned famous yesteryear's song has just been proved right (repeatedly) by the super-cool magazine 'People'. Looking at the way they are 'breaking' stories, it won't be surprising to see the leading dailies' editors breaking the heads of their journos! The latest issue has Karan Johar...even before you get any kind of ideas about his 'confessions', then let us play the spoilsport by saying NO...Karan has not spoken on his sexual preferences. And even though 'People' tried to take up the forbidden route, the normally calm Karan suddenly becomes 'Current Johar' and answers, "That's not for you to know and not for me to reveal. My personal life will always be my personal life". Not just that, you can find the ever-so-charming Karan share his views on his family, his background (how he had almost landed up in France and what made him stop), his very closet friends and of course, the icing on the cake...you guessed it right...the one and only SRK! Overall, after reading this issue, one would surely be forced to rename May 25 (Karan's birthday) as Friendship Day, as we certainly believe that there cannot be a greater friend, philosopher and guide than Karan!

Reality Shows Are Far Away From Reality, Feel Participants

Most reality shows, which have gained immense popularity in the recent past, are far from presenting reality to the viewers, the participants of some of these shows say."Whatever these channels are showing us, it is all false, manipulative and usually fixed weeks before the actual shooting. One cannot rely on their authenticity as it is all based on the irrational choices of a few decision-makers, " British-born pop singer Taz aka Tarsame Singh Jarnail told.Taz, of pop band "Stereo Nation", had participated in a singing realty show "Dhoom Macha De" on NDTV Imagine early this year. He came to the city to participate in Chandigarh Carnival."I do not want to comment anything on the genuineness of the judges' decision. In future, I have decided that I will not take part in any of the reality show, either as a judge or as a participant, " he said.Supporting these views, Diana Hayden, who had recently participated in the "Big Boss 2" on Colors TV, said: "It is difficult to believe them as all these reality shows are motivated with making profits and they can go up to any limit to attain it." However, one should also understand the fact that after all, the TV channels were a commercial proposition and not a charity, she added. "Amid the rat race among various channels, these reality shows are an easy option for increasing the TRPs during prime time. The producer will only show that thing on screen that is controversial and will help in engaging the audiences, " said the former Miss World.Talking about the "Big Boss 2", she said: "They showed only a one hour edited version from a recording of 24 hours. They did not show truth and presented our relations in such a manner that everyone outside the house and media persons started concocting wrong stories about our relations."

Ghajini Music Review

EXPECTATIONSHuge with a capital H - That's the best way to describe the expectations that one has from the music of Ghajini. An Aamir Khan project is always big. When A.R. Rahman gets involved, it only becomes bigger. And when it's a project like Ghajini, which is a hardcore commercial fare, it has to be of one of the biggest, if not 'THE' biggest soundtrack of the year. Add
name like Prasoon Joshi, who writes the lyrics for the film and you
know that there is just no room for any error whatsoever. So what
do we get here? Let's read on!

MUSIC Ever since the music release of Roja, the common saying
for almost a decade and a half has been - 'Rahman's music takes
time to grow'. That has indeed been the case for some of his best
work ever which has gone on to be huge commercial success. Now
imagine his music appealing to your ears in the very first go itself!
The results are meant to be fantabulous and immediately
acceptable, something which happens in case of Ghajini.

A.R. Rahman truly creates a soundtrack which makes an instant impact and yet retains the classy touch which is expected from him, especially noticeable in songs like 'Guzarish' and 'Kaise Mujhe'. Both being complex compositions due to the kind of variation that Rahman brings in spinning a melodic tale, 'Guzarish' and 'Kaise Mujhe' work and how! While 'Guzarish' is sweet-n-saccharine with Bollywood romance at its best, 'Kaise Mujhe' reminds of the kind of work that Ismail Darbar has been doing ever since his Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam days. Slow and pensive, it has a classy feel to it and sound even better in its 'instrumental' version. Someone bring on that 'Karaoke' please!

Only Rahman could have made something like this possible and if you have been a fan of 'Latka Dikha Diya Tumne' (Hindustani), then be sure that 'Aye Bachchu' would get the house on fire, which is a foot tapping track that is way beyond the likes of 'Shano Shano' (Yuuvraaj). It is a party track which has an out and out Western rhythm to it and should be quite some eye candy. Ditto for 'Latoo' which is heavy on orchestra, rightly so since the genre of the number requires that to be the case. The only number which is 'un-Rahmanish' in appeal and appears to be coming from the house of Pritam or Vishal-Shekhar, it is fast paced and boasts of an instant recollection quotient.

'Behka' could well be the 'Main Aisa Kyon Hoon' (Lakshya) moment for Aamir Khan in the way it is has been composed. The most unique composition of the album and something which Rahman has attempted after a long time. 'Behka' has an international sound in the way it is paced and arranged. Especially watch out for the 'antara' portion and you know for yourself that what sets it apart from any other Rahman song you would have heard in the recent times.LYRICSWith Prasoon Joshi around, lyrics are bound to be not just impressive but even way different from what one hears in a regular Bollywood album. Whether it is the poetic feel of 'Guzarish' or the intoxicated feel of 'Behka', Prasoon is in full form here. Of course when it comes to bringing on some fun on the house, 'Aye Bachchu' and 'Latoo' win hands down.

VOCALS Javed Ali makes best use of the opportunity that he gets with 'Guzarish'. First 'Jashn-E-Bahaaran' and now 'Guzarish', the young man is certainly looking up in his career. Another new singer, Benny Dayal, who made a worthy debut with 'Tu Meri Dost Hain' (Yuuvvraaj), is good once again in 'Kaise Mujhe'. What comes across as a pleasant surprise is to see Shreya Ghoshal letting her hair down for 'Latoo', a kind of track which, on any other day would have fell in Sunidhi Chauhan's lap. Suzanne, who continues to make an impression with every opportunity that comes to her, knows that 'Aye Bachchu' is the number for the dance floor and she gets the right attitude in place to justify her presence in the song as the chosen one.

OVERALLGhajini is what one calls as a chartbuster album in the offering. Clearly boasting of Rahman's best soundtrack of the year (yes, it is better than Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa, Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj and Ada), Ghajini in fact, sees Rahman-Aamir collaboration being successful yet again after some of their best work together in Rang De Basanti, Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India and Rangeela. The music of Ghajini is all set to make waves way into 2009 after the Christmas release of the film. When 'best of the best' list would be compiled at the year end, it would be hard to ignore Ghajini.

What The Heck Is Wrong With Rani?

Rani Mukherjee could very well be considered the only actress in
B-Town who threw it all away when she was right there at the top.

She was a fine actress with great screen presence. Then what went wrong? The biggest mistake this hazel eyed beauty made was that she confined herself to her favourite Yash Raj camp.

Now she's in the desperate need of a comeback film and she's doing everything for it. In her new film 'Haddipa' with the younger Shahid Kapur, she plays a cricket lover who dresses up as a man to get into a team.

She's been sporting a beard throughout the film.

Reportedly this is the only film she has and will be her only release in 2009. No wonder the once upon of a time 'Rani' of our hearts is scared.

The buzz is that Rani is not glad with the first rushes of the film and has asked her dear Adi to look into it and help the director of the film, Anurag Singh.

In fact her behaviour has been high-handed too.

Rumour has it that she's even been calling the shots and even teaching senior actors how to act.

She already has made enemies out of friends in the past. Wonder what Shahid who considered her one of the best actresses in the industry has been thinking of late!

Kareena Kapoor Collapses At Home

The world knows that Saif Ali Khan is madly in love and very serious about his current girlfriend of a year, Kareena Kapoor.

He's reportedly said, "Yes, Kareena has been invited to Pataudi. It'd have been earlier, but it was too hot. Winter is when our family reunions happen every year and Kareena is now part of the family. My parents are extremely fond of Kareena."
He adds, "This relationship is 'IT' for me. Today I feel very settled and very happy, though a bit lonely. And when I've bad days, I feel I'm being ungrateful. I'm now looking forward to settling down with Kareena.
Our marriage will happen very shortly as soon as we both have a little less work on hand and we can give the marriage quality time. Also, her family has to be ready for our marriage.
We're very close. She has been really gracious in inviting me into her family. She's made sure I'm part of her family. I've also met Daboo uncle (Randhir) a few times, shared friendly drinks with him.
As for Karisma, I think she's the sweetest girl ever in the world. I'm deeply fond of both Karisma and her husband Sanjay (Kapoor). They're truly wonderful people. Kareena's family has taken to me as warmly as my family has taken to her.
He thinks that his lifestyle has changed completely after his heart attack. He adds that if it wasn't for that life- changing experience, I wouldn't be in a relationship with Kareena right now. He now hardly drinks or smokes or parties.
But the buzz is that the love of his life is not keeping too well and her hectic schedule has taken a toll on her health. She has fever and has a throat infection too.
Confirms a source, "All this started after Kareena attended an event at Parel on Sunday evening. Her condition is so bad that she collapsed after coming home. She was in such terrible shape that her mom had to call in the doctor. He's giving her injections so that she can at least stand on her feet.
Kareena thinks that her collapse has been caused by overwork and exhaustion as she has been working non-stop for the last 6 months round the clock.

I Did Not Want To Spoil Abhishek's Fun:Aishwarya

Its said that Aishwarya was supposed to be there in Dostana but she decided to drop out on her own.
When asked she said that it was her decison drop out coz she felt that the film was actually based on the chemistry and the rapport that John and Abhishekh share. Its not about her love story.
She personally felt that if she would be in the film then the entire focus would be on her and Abhishekh and the main story of the film would be sidelined.
The viewers wold start expecting a love story between them and the fun space and chemistry between Abhishekh John would be neglected.
She also said that as the movie was supposed to be filmed back then and be her first release after marriage she did not want the viewers to start assuming things.
They were seen together in Sarkar Raj but in a serious role but Dostana being a light and funfilled film she did not want to spoil the fun so she decided to walk out.
When asked about the kissing scene between John and Abhishekh all she had to say was finally all that mattered was if the viewers enjoyed the film or not.

I did Not Steal Your Boyfriend Rakhi: Shradha

Dearest sister Rakhi,
I am really shocked and stunned on reading your interview to Purba Dutt of the Times of India. I am told that this article was published in many print editions of the Times of India all over the country today. In fact, even my family members read it and phoned me and scolded me. In this article you have accused me of being Abhishek's new girlfriend - this is completely wrong and incorrect. Dearest sister Rakhi, I am NOT DATING OR SEEING Abhishek Awasthi. I have always considered him to be a good friend.Yes, Abhishek has been showering me with a lot of attention and small gifts now and then, but I always thought that he was just being a good friend and a perfect gentleman. Since I am alone and not dating or seeing anybody else, maybe he was just trying to make me feel comfortable. In fact when I came to know about some press reports linking me with Abhishek, I immediately told my good friend and free lance journalist Flynn Remedios (who I think is your Publicist and Media Manager) to talk to the media and even release an official written denial.I have nothing to do with your breakup with Abhishek. If I had any idea that Abhishek was interested in me or interested in dating me, I would have immediately phoned you and informed you about it. You know dear Rakhi that we all need help in this industry. We all need references and tips and Abhishek did help me on a few occasions. Dear Rakhi, I have always admired you. You are one of my role models in the industry. You have achieved so much over the last few years in spite of not having any godfather in the industry or a rich wealthy boyfriend. You have achieved all this by sheer hard work, determination and perseverance.I admire your resilience, tenacity and even your style. Just about a month ago, when I met Flynn Remedios, I told him that I would like to meet you so that we could collaborate on some issues and he said he would arrange a meeting. If you so desire, I can maybe talk to Abhishek and tell him to beg forgiveness and get back to you. You have done so much for him. You have been like a Messiah for Abhishek. I am surprised that he refused to marry you and dumped you.Dear Rakhi, I want to clarify and assure you that I had nothing to do with the problems in your relationship. I have no "relationship" with Abhishek. And if I have done anything wrong unknowingly please forgive me Wishing you a very happy birthday and many, many happy returns of the day in advance.

With love and respect,

Shradha Sharma....

Yuvvraaj Movie Preview

Every step you take, every move you make... we'll be watchin' you. Have altered the lines of a famous song. For, this one's applicable for Subhash Ghai, a proficient storyteller, one of the most successful stories from this side of the Atlantic. Irrespective of how his films are received at the ticket window, Ghai's movies are always under scrutiny. You watch every film with a magnifying glass.Yuvvraaj is no exception!Ghai's forte has been drama. Recall the dramatic moments in KARZ, VIDHAATA, MERI JUNG, RAM LAKHAN, KARMA, SAUDAGAR. He re-visits the genre with Yuvvraaj. Besides, Yuvvraaj is his most opulent work thus far. It has a sweeping effect, the film makes a stunning visual statement. Honestly, Yuvvraaj isn't Ghai's best work, but post YAADEIN, KISNA and BLACK & WHITE, Yuvvraaj salvages him, even redeems the storyteller. The story (Ghai) mirrors a universal truth. Greed leads to disputes and in turn, ruins all relationships. A fact you've heard or witnessed time and again in real life. While the story is captivating, the screenplay doesn't really do justice to the thought. Also, Rahman's music acts as a soothing balm, but the problem is, it takes time to grow on the listener. And that could be a deterrent. Yet, in all fairness, Yuvvraaj is a notch above the commonplace. If you intend spending your hard-earned money on it or devoting 3 hours of your precious time on Ghai's new outing, chances are you won't regret it. Deven Yuvvraaj (Salman Khan) is a chorus singer, in love with Anushka (Katrina Kaif). Her father Dr. Banton (Boman Irani), however, is dead against this relationship. Things take a turn when Deven's father passes away and he returns to London to stake claim on his father's wealth. He meets his two estranged brothers Gyanesh Yuvvraaj (Anil Kapoor) and Danny Yuvvraaj (Zayed Khan) after almost twelve years. But things aren't hunky-dory between them...Ghai has an eye for visuals and every frame of Yuvvraaj seems like a painting on celluloid.

Unmistakably, that's the first thing you notice as Yuvvraaj unfolds. It takes time to absorb Yuvvraaj. In fact, Ghai doesn't open all his cards at the very outset. It's only when the father (Javed Shaikh) passes away and Mithun Chakraborty, the Executor of the Will, enters the scene that the wheels start moving. The film gathers momentum after the interval. If the first hour has a few by-now-famous Ghai scenes, the second hour sees Ghai in form, with a number of sequences staying in your memory. The penultimate 20-25 minutes are the best. Watch Anil go through the handycam with disbelief, watch Anil and Salman's act during the concert, watch Salman's emotional outburst towards the end... also the titles (brings back memories of OM SHANTI OM).On the flip side, the screenplay is erratic. There're constant highs and lows in this journey, the film works in patches. In fact, the screenplay falls prey to predictability and mediocrity at places.Ghai handles the dramatic scenes with flourish. Rahman's music is soothing, but you expect more because Ghai's movies are embellished with lilting music that you recall even after 2 or 3 decades. Kabir Lal captures the striking beauty of Europe well. The output is superb. The sets (Omung Kumar) are truly majestic.Yuvvraaj belongs to Anil Kapoor, who towers above the entire cast and delivers a natural, believable performance. Salman's looks are inconsistent. At times the boyish look is intact, at times he looks bloated. Ditto for his hairstyle. His performance, however, is better, mainly towards the finale. Zayed tries hard and convinces in a few scenes. Mithun Chakraborty is fantastic in a brief role. Katrina looks angelic. Despite the focus being on the three men, she registers an impact. Boman Irani is credible, especially in the scene when he steps out of the Operation Theatre towards the end. Aushima Sawhney is confident. Anjan Srivastava and the pack of villains/vamps look straight out of RAM LAKHAN and TAAL.

In the whole, Yuvvraaj is interesting in parts, with the penultimate 20/25 minutes taking the film to an all-time high.At the box-office, the package (a mammoth cast, Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman, the stunning locales of Europe) should ensure a hearty opening and with no major opposition in the forthcoming week, it should keep its investors smiling.

Pataudi Gets To Meet Its Bahu, Kareena!!!

Kareena Kapoor is all set to take her relationship with Saif to another level. She'll be visiting his ancestral village Pataudi in Haryana. A privilege that none of Saif ladies from the past have been given.

Confesses Saif, "Yes, Kareena has been invited to Pataudi. It'd have been earlier. But it's too hot right now. Winter is when our family reunions happen every year. And Kareena is now part of the family. My parents are extremely fond of Kareena."

Sighs Saif, "This relationship is 'IT' for me. Today I feel very settled and very happy. Though a bit lonely. And when I've bad days I feel I'm being ungrateful. I'm now looking forward to settling down with Kareena.

Our marriage will happen very shortly as soon as we both have a little less work on hand and we can give the marriage quality time. Also, her family has to be ready for our marriage."

Saif is very happy with Kareena's mom. "We're very close. She has been really gracious in inviting me into her family.

She's made sure I'm part of her family. I've also met Daboo Uncle a few times, shared friendly drinks with her. As for Karisma, I think she's the sweetest girl ever in the world. I'm deeply fond of both Karisma and her husband Sanjay. They're truly wonderful people. Kareena's family has taken to me as warmly as my family has taken to her."

Saif has a lot to be thankful for. "My lifestyle has changed completely after the heart attack. Looking back it's hard to believe I went through such a health scare.

If it wasn't for that life-changing experience I wouldn't be in a relationship with Kareena right now. I hardly drink. Don't even look forward to drinking any more. I don't smoke or party."

All because of love.

Katrina Stands By Boy-Friend, Defends Attack On Vivek

Salman Khan has almost been Katrina's godfather from day one. He was the man who introduced her to the Hindi film industry and has shown her around.

So that's why even though she mightn't like to admit it, she likes to keep her guardian cum lover boy happy.

Now it's well known that Salman hasn't yet forgiven his ex Ash's ex boyfriend Vivek. Though Vivek has extended the olive branch many times, Sallu has spurned him many times.

Kat like a true girlfriend supports his stand.

She's said, "There's only one person whom Salman has made his displeasure very clear about for which he has a very valid reason. I think he is very uncomfortable with his friends being around Viveik. Everyone knows about it because Salman has spoken about it."

But she says she's valid reasons for working with Sallu's other
enemy SRK.

She's added, "See, whatever happened was between the two of them. I wasn't involved. Both have come out in the open and spoken about it to the media. But at the end of the day, they're senior professionals from the film industry and they have been around much longer than I have."

Well, she might be a wooden actress but she sure knows how to give interesting diplomatic answers like a true blue B-Town chick.

Kinng Kumar is going places.

After teaming up with a host of Hollywood stars like Denise Richards, Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh etc, rumour has it that he's set to sing along with supermodel Naomi Campbell in a duet for the animated movie 'Jumbo'.

The English model, actress and singer, had a number 1 hit in Japan with 'Long Vacation' from her 'Baby Woman' album.

Akki is looking forward to working with Deepa Mehta a lot because he hasn't worked with Oscar nominated directors much.

Book Review: Koffee With Karan

'Koffee With Karan' - One wonders whether Karan Johar himself is aware about this book being published. Agreed that he has been all busy with Dostana and yet-to-get-on-floors My Name Is Khan, but it is rather surprising that he hasn't uttered a single word on 'Koffee With Karan', the book which has found it's way into the shelves. This is a book which publishes the script of some of the select celebrity chats that Karan Johar engaged with in his extremely popular television show by the same name which has been running season after season. A good idea indeed which is let down completely due to poor layout and presentation!

That's right. What could well have been an engaging exercise is relegated to being a chapter-by-chapter account of what happened in each of the episodes; just like it would happen in a school text book. In fact the layout format of 'Koffee With Karan' appears to be a school/college guide with an unimaginative design, boring presentation and some tiresome read.

Of course, on the face value it did seem like a good idea i.e. to present the scripts of all the episodes verbatim for readers to cherish in case they have missed seeing them on the telly. In fact, even for those who have seen the episodes already, it may not have been a bad idea to revisit all the fun, humor and scandals that were unveiled in trademark Karan style. However, it is choice of publication house which is the piece of the villain here since it doesn't even try to benefit from the big opportunity it had in hand and instead merely places the entire script in a chapter after chapter format.

While the conversational text does become cumbersome after a point (there are close to 550 pages in the book), what makes it readable to some extent are the snippets that are placed page after page which highlights some of the quotable quotes. In fact I found myself only going through them after a point in time since that seemed to be good enough for me to gather any 'masala', if at all it was present in any episode. Beyond this, 'Koffee With Karan' turns out to be a book which one may want to finish one chapter at a time in one's spare time. In nutshell, hardly a book which classifies itself as 'can't be put down till the last page is through' kinds.

For those who are interested to know the episodes that the book covers, the celebrities being covered are Shah Rukh, Kajol, Rani, Kareena, Preity, Saif, Aishwarya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Fardeen, Zayed, Gurinder Chadha, Farah Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Gauri Khan, Suzanne Roshan, Bipasha, Lara, Ekta Kapoor, Sunita Menon, Sushmita, Sanjay Dutt, Rakhi Sawant, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Shabana Azmi, Shobha Dey, Rahul Bose, Konkona Sen, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Malaika Arora, Amrita Arora, Neetu Singh, Rishi Kapoor, Esha Deol, Shahid Kapoor, Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman.

Some of the quotes that made 'Koffee With Karan' the celebrity show it was are reproduced as below:

"The strangest thing people wonder about me is whether I am a homosexual or bisexual. You know, I cannot have two kids by heavy petting" - Shah Rukh Khan

"Anil Kapoor was the worst dancer I have ever worked with" - Farah Khan

"I often love to hate Aishwarya" - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

"I believe that doctors would give you what God could not" - Rakhi Sawant

"Good girls go to heaven; naughty girls go everywhere" - Amrita Arora

"Vivek Oberoi is the most over rated actor in Hindi cinema" - Sanjay Leela Bhansali

"People came to see Bipasha Basu in Jism; no one came to see me" - John Abraham

"Women's feet turn me on" - Sanjay Dutt

"Aamir Khan told me that I was doing Sameer's character all wrong in Dil Chahta Hai" - Saif Ali Khan

"Aishwarya Rai is the worst dressed Indian woman" - Shobha De

"90 percent of Indian cinema is crap" - Rahul Bose

"I am affirming that the casting couch for men exists in the modeling world" - Arjun Rampal

"The best part about being a superstar is that you can wear the most outrageous of clothes and they say 'it's in!'" - Amitabh Bachchan

Of course quite a few of these quotes were made months back when the episodes were telecast (and may have even lost relevance today) but nevertheless they do make for a spicy read at places. In the end, 'Koffee With Karan' isn't even the kind which would turn on the biggest of the movie buffs. At maximum, its readership is restricted to the select few who have been absolutely clueless about how the show 'Koffee With Karan' looked like (difficult to imagine such a breed!) or those who were in love with the show and want to go through the chapters due to sheer nostalgia.

"Today's Audience Is Ruthless" - Madhur Bhandarkar

Fashion is a success and in the process has turned out to be the biggest money spinner of Madhur Bhandarkar's decade long career. While brand Madhur has been created in the process, the filmmaker continues to be obsessed with telling different stories in his own experimental manner. A fortnight after the release of the film, as he finally settles down to the fact that he has to move on to the next project, Madhur Bhandarkar gets into this Exclusive two part conversation with Joginder Tuteja where he bares his heart out about the success of Fashion and how it still won't change his approach towards movie making.

With a multi crore commercial success like Fashion under your belt, is it goodbye to serious cinema and welcome to hardcore money spinner worthy commercial cinema?
Actually, I have never ever got into matters like these. I have always maintained that I am an experimental filmmaker whose films also get commercial viability. This way, I am truly blessed because my films also get critical acclaim and also National awards. I am really happy with the kind of cinema I make, the subjects I explore and the treatment I give to my films.

But when a film like Fashion does such business, isn't it tempting to go for those mega bucks?
See, the subject of Fashion was such that it required huge budget due. The movie was required to be opulent with a mega look and sheer grandeur to boast. A budget comes after you have short listed the subject and this is how my films in future too would be planned. I am not someone who makes proposal cinema ki chalo 3 hero le lo, 3 heroine daal do aur kuch gaane bhi bhar do! Right from Chandni Bar to Fashion, the film's scale has been set as per the script. I went to swanky boardrooms for Corporate; I entered the dingy by lanes for Traffic Signal.

A budget comes after you have short listed the subject and this is how my films in future too would be planned.
Please carry on…
Tomorrow I may make a film for which I am just require an Rs. 8 crore budget; I don't have to make my next movie also as big as Fashion. It's not that because my last film was made in Rs. 30 crores, the next has to carry a Rs. 60 crores budget.

Scenario may have only improved after Fashion, isn't it?
I guess I can stand up and say that producers have been knocking the doors with even more vigor. It may sound immodest to a few but let me state a fact - I have spent last 8-9 years making a brand for myself. This time period has seen each of my movies making money. Moreover, all of them have been made in a certain kind of preset budget; something which my producers have always acknowledged. They know that Madhur guarantees definite recovery and also ensures profit inflow.

What has been the secret of making it happen film after film?
I know for sure how to cut cost and resist the temptation of going overboard. I also don't opt for fancy locations just for the sake of it and instead try shooting at real locations as much as possible. I also keep in constant touch with my exhibitors and distributors and discuss about audience's taste, emerging trends and how investment could be recovered. This is what makes my films safer and I end up getting 3 to 4 times the investment back. No wonder, producers have maintained that Madhur is a producer's director (smiles).

I also keep in constant touch with my exhibitors and distributors and discuss about audience's taste, emerging trends and how investment could be recovered.
Since you always aspire to pick up experimental subjects, doesn't it become risky project after project?
You are right in saying that because the fact is that each of the subjects that I have explored has been dicey for me. However, where I get all my knowledge and learning is by interacting with so many people. I don't make films by doing a DVD rip off or picking up a South Indian film for a remake. I know for sure that the way I make my films, it turns out to be a tedious process. It is risky too and also takes more time. But then tell me, which movie is secure today? Even if it is a hardcore commercial cinema with 3 heroes and 3 heroines, is it safe anymore? Can anyone guarantee that they would work at the box office? No one can.

I don't make films by doing a DVD rip off or picking up a South Indian film for a remake.
You seem to be unsure about the way audience would react!
See, today's audience is ruthless. It gets it after the opening show on Friday itself that whether the film was indeed made with a purpose or was it just a proposal in the making. At the end of the day it is merit that does all the talking. Star system or big budget sure shot successes are a passe. At the end of the day it is all about content and I am really happy that there is a major revamp in the industry and the audience.

Mallika Sherawat Features In The November Issue Of Grazia

What do you call a lady who owns the patent of all the three degrees of Hot, Hotter and Hottest? Before you start rattling down names or disturb the traffic of Google, let us tell you that she is none other than Madame Mallika Sherawat, who is (needless to say) all over not just the place, but also over everyone's hearts! If that was not enough, then, she is in a very corporately chic avatar in the latest edition of the fashion magazine Grazia.

They talk about the 'Girl next door'. But looking at Mallika, even this tag fails to impress the situation. The term that really describes her best is 'The Boss Next Cabin'. For starters, Mallika, who is known for her 'words-faster-than-bullets' kind of speech, has mellowed down now, and which shows in the whole of the interview. The whole article is more of an A-Z of Mallika (from what she was to what she is today), which is accompanied by snaps (full marks to the photographer for presenting her like never before) which complements the article. A small mention to the section of '5 Things To Know About Mallika', which gives an insight of the 'Real Mallika'!

All in all, it's indeed a collectors issue to say the least!

Imran's New Look For 'Delhi Belly'

Have you seen Imran Khan lately? Long, dishevelled hair, a stubble, he's even lost weight. All for a role. The film in question? Uncle Aamir Khan's DELHI BELLY. "I am on a strict diet, having one meal a day. That's the demand of the character. He has to look lean. Aamir Uncle has asked me to follow a regime, you know how particular he is about everything," Imran tells me.

Talking of DELHI BELLY, Imran feels the film holds tremendous appeal for the international audiences. "It should prove to be that breakthrough film in the international markets. Aamir knows better, he must've done a lot of homework before plunging headlong into this film," he adds. I endorse this viewpoint!

The moment Imran completes DELHI BELLY, he has to regain the lost weight and muscles for LUCK, which is heading towards completion.

Besides DELHI BELLY and LUCK [signed before JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA], Imran hasn't signed any new film yet. "There've been offers, but nothing that would excite me. I've decided to take a break of at least a few months before I sign my next venture. I've been shooting non-stop, I need to unwind before I accept new assignments," Imran states.

Music Reviews Of Sorry Bhai!

First things first, if Bas Ek Pal was the calling card of Mithoon who shot to limelight with 'Tere Bin' then watch out for Gaurav Dayal. He may well see good things happening for him in months to come if Sorry Bhai is any indication. The songs bear a certain quality to them and bring with them the kind of sound that spells quality. Let's play them on to see how Gaurav has come together with lyricist Amitabh Varma to promise another successful soundtrack.

K.K. spells quality and it is 100% guaranteed the moment he opens 'Mere Khuda' in a full throated manner. Soft rock has been the genre where K.K. has never failed in and 'Mere Khuda' is no exception. A brilliant track that has some never-heard-before lyrics by Amitabh, 'Mere Khuda' is a number which could well be the 'Tere Bin' moment of Sorry Bhai.

Music Review Of Sorry Bhai!
Of course, in the recent past Pritam has come up with a dozen odd numbers belonging to this genre but play on 'Mere Khuda' once and rest assured you would be hooked for hours at stretch. A number like this deserves to be heard in it's remix format and 'Mere Khuda' isn't any exception. Opening with the sound of guitar, it never once goes overboard and comes with just the right sound to be played in pubs and clubs. A chartbuster in the making.

A romantic ballad follows next in the form of 'Pal' which has an urban contemporary feel to it and belongs to the pop genre. Sung in a soft and cool mood by Sunidhi Chauhan and newcomer Chayan Adhikari (who is just 21), 'Pal' is the kind of number that you wish was played in the background as you had a candle light rendezvous with your loved one.

'Pal' may not be the kind of number that you may take to the streets but put it on in a repeat mode with the lights switched off and be rest assured that a feeling of romance would be rekindled. Now this is hardly a number that you want to be re-orchestrated but that exactly happens once it also falls pray to the 'remix version'. It is not bad but one wishes that the album just saw the original version being retained!

Guest composer Vivek Phillip makes a contribution with the title song 'Sorry Bhai' for which he also writes the English lyrics. Strangely, the first thing that comes to mind on hearing 'Sorry Bhai' is the presence of Sanjay Suri in the film. Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Jhankaar Beats, Bas Ek Pal - Somehow Sanjay's presence in each of these three films can be associated with the sound that the number 'Sorry Bhai' carries. Another similarity is resemblance to the kind of sound that such soft compositions by Vishal-Shekhar carry. A promotional track which goes with the theme of the film and is sung by K.K., Sunidhi Chauhan and Abhishek Nailwal, 'Sorry Bhai' brings with it a feel good factor that should keep the smiles on.

After 'Mere Khuda', the number which impresses most is 'Jalte Hain'. In the process it also explains how same song could sound so different when sung by two different singers. When the first version comes with Abhishek Nailwal (who was quite impressive in his rendition of 'Yaara Ve' - Naksha two years back), one isn't much impressed. From his full throated rendition of 'Yaara Ve', Abhishek moves on to touch some softer notes in 'Jalte Hain', though without coming up with the desired results. Later in the album, his voice is also heard in the song's 'remix version'.

However, the moment K.K. comes on the scene with his own version of 'Jalte Hain', the song takes on a different meaning altogether. Elevated to a different level by the singer who never fails to impress, 'Jalte Hain' has some poetic lyrics by Amitabh that make it extra special. Watch out for this love song in the film's narrative; it is certainly going to make a lasting impression.

Finally arrives the English track 'Some Times' which is rendered by prominent Jazz singer Nanette Natal. A kind of number which brings with it just the kind of sound that plays on in background as you have a quite-n-nice dinner with your beloved in an up-market hotel, 'Some Times' has an extremely classy feel to it and should manage to find an audience for itself in the long run, just like Rock On did once the film hit theaters.

After hearing the songs of Sorry Bhai, what can be said for sure is that filmmaker Onir knows a thing or two about music. Case in point being My Brother Nikhil ('Le Chale') followed by Bas Ek Pal ('Tere Bin'). Now he manages to create a hat trick of soulful numbers with each and every track working for Sorry Bhai, and 'Mere Khuda' followed by 'Jalte Hain' standing tall. Go for it!

Bobby Deol Is Setting Up A Production Empire

After losing ten kgs for his role in Chamku, Bobby Deol is now heavily into chocolates. "It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and binging on chocolates."Like his dad and elder brother, Bobby Deol is now fully into family concerns. In fact the younger Deol scion is so much into production now, he wishes he had got into before. "It's with my film Chamku that I've become involved with our home production. I've been totally involved with its shooting and post-production. I'm like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy. But I now realize home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that THEY believe in. For Chamku, I was part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production. It's my baby." Bobby now wants to assist directors and get more proficient with the technique of filmmaking. "I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was." What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father Dharmendra. "It's a father-son story. There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey. Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik who's another of my favourite director's right now. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work." Sangeeth Sivan and Samir Karnik are part of a new set of directors the Deols want to cultivate, like they once nurtured the talents of Gurinder Chadha and Raj Kumar Santoshi. Says Bobby, "Though I'm open to outside offers, it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in house actors." Dad Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US. "And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him."

Fashion Magazine Verve's collaboration with Dostana

These are really the days of collaborations. Latest one being the collaboration between fashion magazine Verve and this season's blockbuster, Dostana. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Parmesh Shahani, Editorial Director- Verve, said, "We wanted to be associated with the films that reflect the spirit of Verve. Not just that, the banner should be a prestigious one and that the placement of our esteemed brand should be with the flow of the film and not just as a mere prop. And Dostana is one such film which fitted our parameters to a 'T'.The guys at Verve were so impressed with the way the film has shaped up that they have dedicated their November issue to the film and have also named the issue as 'Dostana Special'. Shahani finds immense pride in saying that "We are really very happy to be associated with Dostana, as 'Verve' is at the same wavelength as that of John, Abhishek and Priyanka." The cast of Dostana had even paid a visit to the Verve office to get references for the film. With Dostana going great guns at the Box-Office, one thing is for sure that the Dostana-Verve association is just the tip of the
iceberg!

Gracy Singh To Perform Rabindranath Tagore's 'Shyama'

Immediately after her debut film Lagaan, Gracy Singh was touted as the next big thing to be happening to Bollywood. The sad part was that after a few forgettable films (Armaan and Munnabhai MBBS being the exceptions), she was nowhere in the race. Gracy next release is Deshdrohi but the film has been banned in the Maharashtra.

Leaving all this behind, Gracy is now all set to enthrall the audiences with Rabindranath Tagore's famous dance ballet 'Shyama' in Kolkata, on November 16. An excited Gracy said that 'Shyama' is challenging but at the same time, it is extremely exciting as there is so much depth in it.

'Shyama', basically is a ballet that is a soulful narration of a court dancer (Shyama) falling in love with a foreign merchant (Bajrasen). Since the entire ballet will be presented in the dance form of Bharatnatyam, it only works immensely in favour of the good-looking actress, as she is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer herself.

With the controversial film Deshdrohi and a few others in her kitty, Gracy seems to be back in the race!

"Slumdog Millionaire Is A Fairy Tale Kind Of A Film" - Anil Kapoor

Slumdog Millionaire Is A Fairy Tale
With entertainment dominated by fresh-faced actors now-a-days, it's extremely heartening to see someone break into the corridors of power when in their late forties. Better still when that person's an accomplished actor making a comeback in Bollywood. But what if I say that he is just about to make his Hollywood debut in what is said to be a film which undoubtedly is going to win accolades at the Academy Awards and the Bafta's next year? The film - Slumdog Millionaire, the director - Danny Boyle, step forward Anil Kapoor, a renaissance man who's squeezed several (mostly successful) lives into one and come out on top of the Bollywood tree. In this world exclusive interview from London, the 'jhakaas' actor talks in depth to Devansh Patel about his first Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire, his London Film Festival experience, his expectations, his family reactions, his special message to his fans and above all, praises, praises and more praises for his award winning director Danny Boyle.

We are all eager to know how did an acclaimed Hollywood director like Danny Boyle sign you up for a role in his next film Slumdog Millionaire?
I received a sms saying that Danny Boyle wanted to meet me regarding his next film Slumdog Millionaire in which he had a role for me after he watched Taal and Virasat. Now as you are aware that in Bollywood one is so busy with their commitments that they tend to forget who Danny Boyle is. But when you talk of films like Trainspotting and The Beach, suddenly the name of the director pops up. So I mentioned this to my son as he is a big Danny Boyle fan, in fact all youngsters are. He loves his kind of cinema which is out of the box, pulsating and youthful. He got very excited and told me to reply back to the sms which was lying in my inbox since quite a few days. So I called my friend Deepak Nayar in L.A who coincidently was handling the production of the same film. He informed me that Danny Boyle is a cult figure in the U.S. Then the script came and my son and I read it. We loved it, fixed an appointment and there I was, without any auditions, a part of Slumdog Millionaire.

I received a sms saying that Danny Boyle wanted to meet me regarding his next film Slumdog Millionaire in which he had a role for me after he watched Taal and Virasat.
Were you at all worried about the screen space Danny would've given you in the film initially when he offered you the film?
When you're working with the likes of Danny Boyle and when the script is written by Simon Beaufoy, there is bound to be a good role for you irrespective of the length of your own role. When you work in an international film like Slumdog Millionaire, even two scenes done correctly in the film work wonders. And you're forgetting that I had already read the script. It's only in India that you worry about screen space and the length.

Danny Boyle has projected Mumbai in Slumdog Millionaire like no other film maker has ever done. What do you think?
I am more than happy about it. In fact, Slumdog Millionaire is a fairy tale kind of a film. You have to see the film to believe it. I mean he has shot some scenes in the slums so beautifully, you feel touched by the direction and the camera work. It was so perfect.

People across the globe who've watched Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach wouldn't expect a Slumdog Millionaire, will they?
When you work in an international film like Slumdog Millionaire, even two scenes done correctly in the film work wonders.
Danny has got his own style. When the chief of Fox Searchlights, Peter Rice, was introducing Danny Boyle in a tribute to the director in L.A, that's the time I realized the kind of respect he has across the globe. Peter Rice quoted, "Danny has never made the same kind of film ever". When Danny was offered to direct Alien 4, he was offered a big cheque which he refused. He just wanted to direct films which he would believe in and wanted to make. He chose to direct a 15 million dollar film than a 150 million dollar one. He is a risk taker in a way. I mean, the only well known face in Slumdog Millionaire is Irrfan Khan who is known worldwide. All the rest are new comers including me.

You play the host of the famous tele series 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'. From Big B to SRK and now comes Anil Kapoor. Any kind of research went into playing the role of Prem?
A lot of literature was sent to me through the script anyway. But first I spoke to Danny and the way he saw the character and how he wanted him to behave. Then he gave me some material on 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire'. In Mumbai, I contacted Siddharth Basu, the person who was responsible for the programme in India. He was very helpful in the research too. Playing an engineer, stock broker, doctor or a businessman is easy because you meet them in your everyday life. But there are very few hosts of the television programme whom you don't meet regularly. You see them only on the television. So there was not a direct reference point here except for the episodes of Mr Bachchan and Shah Rukh in India and the shows done by hosts in the U.K and the U.S. I went through all these tapes and started doing some episodes with Siddharth and his team. I also had a lot of workshop with Danny and the main protagonist of the film Dev Patel.

Playing an engineer, stock broker, doctor or a businessman is easy because you meet them in your everyday life. But there are very few hosts of the television programme whom you don't meet regularly.
But how was it to be working with the British talent Dev Patel who plays the boy from the slums winning the million rupees?
He is the main hero of the film. He is the protagonist of Slumdog Millionaire. His journey has three characters that do the same role. How as a child in slums he grows up, then becomes a bit older and then it is Dev Patel. There are three actors and the casting of those three Dev Patel's is phenomenal. I was speechless after watching the film at the London Film Festival and thanks to Loveleen Tandon who has done an amazing job of casting in the film.

Was Dev at all nervous when he met you for the first time?
Not at all. He was a thorough professional. He originally comes from Gujarat but is born and brought up in London. He has also done one T.V serial called Skins in the U.K. For me, it was my first English film and for him, it was his first feature film. So we both were a bit nervous initially even though I had come with a lot of experience behind me. We got along very well and Danny also told me to help Dev out in whatever and whichever way I could. He had to play a slum boy and because I've had a personal experiences in the slums and have done films like Mashaal, etc I could identify with his role. I was very handy in adding flavour to my and Dev's role.

The critics in the U.K are vouching Slumdog Millionaire to get selected as the Best Film nominee at the Academy Awards in the U.S and at the Bafta Awards in the U.K. What do you have to say?
It's a bit too early to discuss this right now. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that whatever you've just mentioned comes true.

Any other Hollywood films you're going to be a part of in the near future considering the thunderous applaud you received after the screening?
I am at such a stage of my career that whichever film comes across me has to be exciting, on par or better than the one I've done earlier. Currently I've got my hands full in India as far as Bollywood is concerned and if someone does come knocking on my doors from the West, why not?

Danny is not only different from the Indian directors but international directors also. He has his own stand and style and when people do have this speciality in them like what Danny has, they always are different from others.
What differentiates Danny Boyle from all the Bollywood directors you've worked with so far in your career?
Danny is not only different from the Indian directors but international directors also. He has his own stand and style and when people do have this speciality in them like what Danny has, they always are different from others. As I've mentioned before, he is one director who hasn't repeated his style. Danny improvises a lot and never tells his actors how to act. He gives you the script and lets you be. His instructions are minimal and the most important thing - Danny didn't come to India with any attitude. Instead, he told us to help him make a good film. That made a world of difference. It's a hallmark of a great human being and a great director. There isn't a game show being used as the main part of any feature film script. That's the USP of Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire isn't a cross over film in English. It is a Hollywood film directed by Danny Boyle.
Has your family seen the film and what did they think about it?
Yes they all have seen the film. My wife, Sonam and my son, all loved the film. They've said it's awesome. The kind of feedback I've received is incredible. The best comment I received was from a critic who writes for The Independent, UK. He said, "Anil Kapoor makes a memorably narcissistic and two faced quiz host smiling disingenuously while trying to ensure the contestant looses". Even the newspapers like the Observer, Telegraph and The Times have praised not only my performance, but all the other actors in the film who were truly worth admiring especially Dev Patel.

Any message for your fans who are awaiting your first ever Hollywood film?
Yes, I'd like to tell my fans in the U.K that the film releases on January 9 next year in the U.K and to my India fans, well, you'll have to wait just a little bit more. Slumdog Millionaire releases in India in the last week of January. That's our tentative date. We are also planning to keep a special premiere of the film. And more importantly to all my fans across the globe, Slumdog Millionaire isn't a cross over film in English. It is a Hollywood film directed by Danny Boyle. Looking forward for all your comments next year.

Bhatts Strike Again With The Special Look Of Raaz - The Mystery Continues

Trust Bhatts to continue to be their innovative best when it comes to promoting their films. They may keep the budget on a low/medium end for principal shooting or star remunerations but when it comes to bringing the film to the audience, they have seldom back tracked on any front. Whether it is publicity campaign, song promos on satellite/web/radio medium, poster design or sheer quotable quotes centered on the film's theme, Vishesh Films has made sure that heads always turn when a movie coming from their stable is introduced to the audience.

If the poster design of their recent films like Jannat or Awarapan caught instant attention, one can't forget the romantic 'kiss under a shirt' frame of Aashiqui or 'Sanjay Dutt hanging on a cross' still from Sadak more than a decade and a half back. The trend of shock value continues, typically Bhatt ishtyle, as Raaz - The Mystery Continues' look is revealed. And this time around, Bhatts are on rampage as even before the beginning of the song promos, they are unleashing one poster after another, hence managing to build an intrigue that goes by the name of Raaz - The Mystery Continues.

So if the first ever look of the movie sported an all-new logo in a venomous neon green colour that was designed to distinguish it as an out-and-out horror film, another look showed a backless Kangna Ranaut with Raaz - The Mystery Continues written with blood on her back. Well, if the warning of 'This Winter...Fear Comes Homes' wasn't scary enough, what with Kangna's fingers turning into claws waiting to attack anything that comes her way, comes another poster which introduces Emraan Hashmi for the first time to the audience.

With Kangna's pretty, yet glum looking face (which adds on to the mystery), superimposed into the upper half of the body, Emraan is shown to be standing still in the ruins of what looks like Mukesh Mills reconstructed! What also strikes is the halo behind Emraan's head which seems to give an indication of the full moon night, hence hinting the arrival of the troubled souls.

Says a source attached to Vishesh Films, "With an international appeal to boost, the look of the poster has been kept neon green (yet again) to go with the mood, theme and spirit (pun intended) of the film. Also, with a new hairstyle, a French beard and eyes staring right from the poster, Emraan is made to look all intense with the sole aim of going any distance to solve the 'mystery' which continues from the days of Raaz!"

Director Mohit Suri has been known to explore various themes for each of his films. Zeher, Kalyug, Woh Lamhe and Awarapan are good examples to demonstrate the varied routes that the young film maker has attempted in each of his outings. Well, the way his initial campaign is anything to go by, Raaz - The Mystery Continues should be no different

Movie Preview Dostana

Recall the 'Kantaben' episode in Karan Johar's KAL HO NAA HO. The episode is alive even today, in skits, on stage, amongst friends. That was a mere trailer. Picture abhi baaki hain. DOSTANA takes 'Kantaben' episode to another level altogether.

DOSTANA is no BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It's not a serious take on homosexuality either. On the contrary, it's a madcap comedy where two straight men pretend to be gays. Although DOSTANA is a mainstream commercial film, it dares to push the envelope in its own way. It brings homosexuality out of the closet, gives it respect and dignity and doesn't treat gays as 'abnormal'.

Watch The Dostona Of Three Actor
Love triangle in Hindi movies often centre around two guys falling in love with the same girl, or two girls choosing to love the same guy. But DOSTANA is a first. It's the first Hindi film that, at the core, is a rectangle [three men loving the same woman], but two of them, guys in this case, pretend to be a couple.

Sure, DOSTANA has ample shock-value since what has been witnessed in its promos is barely a fraction of what you'd get to watch in the movie. But more than shock-value, the film offers loads of fun-n-laughter and dollops of entertainment in those 14 reels.

A word of appreciation! It requires courage to fund a project like DOSTANA. Karan Johar, the producer, deserves to be lauded for treading the untrodden path. It requires courage and conviction to swim against the tide in your directorial debut. Tarun Mansukhani, the debutante, deserves a few brownie points extra for not thinking straight. It requires courage for two A-list actors to go all out and risk their professional [and personal] lives. Abhishek and John deserve an ovation for not only agreeing to play these characters, but also infusing life in them, without making a mockery of the gay community.

To cut a long story short, DOSTANA is not to be missed. Dharma Productions, the late Yash Johar and Karan Johar's film production outfit, has produced several significant films in the past. Add DOSTANA to the list!

Miami is the setting for DOSTANA. When Sameer [Abhishek Bachchan] and Kunal [John Abraham] are turned down for an apartment because the landlady [Sushmita Mukherjee] doesn't want two strapping young men to corrupt her young sexy niece Neha [Priyanka Chopra], they hatch a plan: they pretend to be gay to secure the apartment.

Over a period of time, Sameer, Kunal and Neha become buddies. When Neha's boss Abhimanyu [Bobby Deol] enters the fray as the third contender for her affections, it gets even hotter…

DOSTANA shocks you all the while and that is its biggest USP. Don't expect stereotypical situations or characters all through this film. Watch Abhishek cook up a romantic story between John and him in Venice. Watch Boman Irani's interaction with Abhishek and John. Watch Kirron Kher's dramatic entry at this point. Howlarious scenes all, they're sure to bring the house down.

If the first hour is laced with crackling chemistry between the guys and terrific humour, things get serious towards the second half since there's one more person vying for Priyanka's attention -- Bobby Deol. There's humour in this hour too, but the focus is mainly on who'd get Priyanka in the end.

The length is a slight deterrent in the second half and the editor could've easily cut the unwanted flab to make the narration in shape. But the film works as a package! Also, the film has a shocking end and people are bound to raise eyebrows. It would have its share of advocates and adversaries. A debatable culmination, for sure!

Director Tarun Mansukhani is here to stay. He deserves kudos for choosing an offbeat story, then making a foolproof screenplay and most importantly, executing it with flourish. DOSTANA merges form and content beautifully, since the film is, technically speaking, sound. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is top notch. The locales of Miami are a feast for your eyes. Costumes and styling are very upmarket.

Vishal-Shekhar's music goes well with the mood of the film. It's young, peppy and energetic. 'Desi Girl' and 'Maa Da Laadla Bigad Gaya' are foot-tapping compositions. The latter is bound to be a rage!

Both Abhishek and John are fantabulous! Abhishek pulls out all the stops and delivers one of the finest performances of his career. His comic timing is superb! John will make guys and girls drool over his amazing physique. But, most importantly, people will sit up and notice how fine an actor John is. Both Abhishek and John compliment each other so well. In fact, had the chemistry and camaraderie been missing, the story would've failed to look convincing. Two thumbs up for these two guys!

Priyanka looks stunning and delivers a first-rate performance. First FASHION, now DOSTANA, Priyanka is back with a bang. Bobby Deol lends the required class to his role. No other actor would've looked so real while underplaying this character.

Boman Irani is sure to bring the house down, the auditorium is sure to resonate with laughter in his sequences. Kirron Kher is superb as the Punjabi mom. Watch her throw a fit when she learns that her son [Abhishek] is gay and much later, when she accepts John as family. She's remarkable! Sushmita Mukherjee, as Priyanka's aunt, is fantastic. She's so, so funny. Shilpa Shetty sizzles in the opening track.

On the whole, DOSTANA is a winner all the way. In terms of content, it might just prove to be a trendsetter. In terms of business, the film holds tremendous appeal for the youth. The 16 to 25 age-group would go into raptures and bonkers over this film. Its business at multiplexes mainly will be amazing. In Overseas too, the film should emerge amongst the biggest draws of 2008. DOSTANA rocks... have a blast!
